  • blue on the brain

I used to wonder when I was a kid why there wasn't any blue food.  I remember when they came out with blue frosting on donuts.  We never got to eat donuts, but I saw a picture in a magazine.  I cut it out and saved it in a special place with other items I secretly hid, having a special meaning only to myself.  Now I save pictures of blue things that I find online.  I don't know why this is.  I just know I really like blue.

I've always wished I could be blue, or have blue features.  I feel like I should have been.  This used to bother my mom a great deal, but now I see it everywhere.  People wear blue nail polish, dye their hair bright blue, and several tv shows and movies have blue people in them.

I love when people create fantasy images that use blue.

I don't understand why, but I need blue around me.  I crave to see it.  I'd love to live someplace that looks like this, but I guess pictures are better than nothing.

I think other people feel the same way.  My favorite music usually has a blue theme embedded in it somehow.

We have holidays that are highlighted by all kinds of other colors, but we don't really celebrate with blue, except when we sometimes use blue themes on Christmas trees or during festivals and productions which feature blue lighting.  The coolest CGI in films has a lot of blue in it.  Blue is a very pleasing color, yet it isn't used very often to color our homes or businesses.  It's odd that blue is used so much as a word in the way we think and feel.

Our brains are so dependent on the color blue that we can't function without it.  This from Blue Lighting Up The Human Brain At Work

In a recent research paper it is reported that it is not just any light that is most effective but rather light of a particular short wavelength (480 nm, i.e. blue light rather than violet or green). This is in accordance with the hypothesis that such non-visual effects are mediated by a recently discovered ancient photoreceptor which is particularly sensitive to blue light.

This is an area that certainly warrants further investigation.’ Dr Derk-Jan Dijk, co-senior author remarks, ‘ Humans are day-active animals, and maybe it is after all not so surprising to a biologist that blue light has these profound effects on our brain. After all, natural daylight contains quite a bit of blue light. We had simply forgotten about it because we are so preoccupied by the ‘visual’ effects of light, which are not particularly dependent on blue light. We now know that other aspects of brain function are.

On the other hand, some people (like me) are extremely photo sensitive and more prone to suffer damage from long term exposure to light, including blue light.  I often have to wear sunglasses to keep the light out.  Is that why I crave to see more blue in pictures?  I don't know.  I was born wanting more blue, so it's hard to say.

Blue is an interesting culture study.  I had no idea blue was such a big deal until I really looked around for more.  And you might be surprised to find out exactly what the 2008 color of the year is.

I've started transferring my survey posts over to Surveypalooza so people coming in from search engines on mobile devices will be able to see the surveys.

Apologies for the missing vids, another upgrade during the server migration swept through like a scan sweeping through the Enterprise. I'll fix those later, kinda busy...
